You often find yourself dealing with headaches each week. You've started to notice some tenderness when you chew and eat. You often suffer from neck and shoulder pain. Did you know that all of these symptoms could be related?

You might be dealing with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or TMJ, which is problems or discomfort with your jaw joint. The good news is that your Amherst, NH dentist has some solutions for you.

What is TMJ?

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most complicated joints in your body. It is responsible for allowing you to chew, yawn, and move your jaw from side to side.

When this joint is not functioning correctly, it can cause problems like:

  • Popping or clicking in your jaw
  • Pain when you open or close your mouth
  • Your jaw locking open or closed
  • Frequent headaches
  • Tenderness in your neck or shoulders
  • Earaches

How is TMJ Treated?

Treating TMJ differs for each patient depending on the severity of their TMJ and their unique needs. Dr. Kenneth Edwards starts with a conservative approach when treating TMJ in Amherst and may recommend starting with treatment such as:

  • Heat and ice treatments
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medication

If these methods aren't providing relief, Dr. Edwards may prescribe a custom mouth guard designed specifically for you. Bruxism, or clenching and grinding your teeth could be causing your TMJ, and a mouth guard protects teeth and alleviates bruxism. These appliances are typically worn at night while you're sleeping to help reposition the jaw and relax muscles.
