Getting Rid of Bad Breath

What to Do About Bad Breath
The most important thing you can do to keep your breath smelling fresh is to make sure you stay on top of your oral health by brushing and flossing regularly. If you wear dentures, be sure to remove them every night and keep them clean of bacteria buildup.
Here are other suggestions for fighting bad breath:
- Stay well-hydrated. Dry mouth can cause bad breath.
- Swish water around your mouth to moisten it; this is particularly useful in the morning to help combat “morning breath.”
- Replace your toothbrush every two or three months.
- Use your toothbrush to brush your tongue or get a tongue scraper. Bacteria can build up and cause odors.
- Chew on cloves or fennel seeds, which have natural antiseptic qualities that can help fight bad breath. You can also try chewing on a sprig of parsley, basil, or mint to neutralize odors. An orange or lemon rind can also be helpful.
- Use an alcohol-free mouthwash that you make yourself using a cup of water, baking soda, and a drop of essential oil (such as peppermint). Swish it around your mouth for thirty seconds—and be sure not to swallow it.
