Dental crowns are necessary for a number of reasons, including strengthening a weak tooth, fixing a broken tooth, holding a dental bridge in place, and covering a dental implant. Crowns are effective for making a tooth strong and restoring its normal function. As strong as they are, you should still take care of a dental crown if you want it to last for as long as possible.

If your Amherst, NH dentist has talked to you about dental crowns for restoring any of your teeth, you should know that proper care of the crown includes knowing what foods to avoid eating. It’s particularly important to avoid these foods immediately after getting the crown. You want to make sure the cement has time to “set.”

Avoid Chewy and Sticky Foods

Chewy and sticky foods can potentially stick onto the dental crown and pull at it, which can impact the life of the crown. Avoid such foods as the following:

  • Gum
  • Raisins
  • Caramel
  • Certain chew candy

Avoid Hard Foods

Hard foods should also be avoided because they can break, crack, or otherwise damage a dental crown. Avoid such foods as the following:

  • Raw vegetables
  • Popcorn
  • Jawbreakers and suckers

It’s also best to avoid chewing on ice.

Take Good Care of Your Crowns

Being careful about what you eat is just one way to make sure your crown lasts as long as it should (up to 15 years!). Here are some other things you can do:

  • When flossing around your crown, slide the floss out between your teeth rather than lifting it, which could catch on the crown and cause damage.
  • Avoid chewing on the crown in the days after it is put on. Give the cement plenty of time to harden.
  • Visit your dentist at least twice each year for professional cleanings. Your dentist can keep an eye and the crown and ensure it is still in good shape.
